In Santiago, an estimated 1,440,000 people are potentially exposed to high noise levels from traffic, railway, airports, construction, and nightlife. Noise is a pollutant — at high levels it harms health and quality of life; at lower continuous levels it drives sleep disturbance, stress, cognitive problems, and cardiovascular disease.
To respond, the Ministry of the Environment (Ministerio del Medio Ambiente) deployed a noise monitoring network across Santiago — sharing live data with citizens and building the evidence base for better noise policy. The Ministry selected Sonitus Systems — a Cognesense brand with local partner Control Acustico to supply and maintain the network.
Control Acustico brings over 20 years of experience in noise and vibration assessment across Chile. Based in Santiago, they are recognised national leaders in the field. In 2018, they teamed up with Sonitus Systems — a Cognesense brand — to extend their environmental monitoring capability using the most reliable equipment on the market.
One partner. Every obligation. Legacy meets future.
The Ministry launched an open information platform to raise awareness and educate the public, with accessible answers to questions such as “what is noise pollution?” and “what are the long-term effects?”.
The Control Acustico team installed a network of EM2030 Sound Level Monitors at key positions across Santiago. Locations were selected based on the severity of potential noise exposure and the number of people living in, working in, or moving through each area.
Data captured by the monitors gives residents a live view of noise levels in their immediate surroundings through a simple traffic-light interface — green for good noise quality, red for poor, meaning no acoustic expertise is required to understand whether a situation needs attention.
The network feeds continuous, defensible data into the Sonitus Cloud platform, giving the Ministry and Control Acustico a single, trusted view of environmental noise across the city.
“Sonitus Systems has been the perfect partner delivering excellent equipment to fulfil these customized projects exactly to our customers needs.”
— Christian Gerard Buchi, CEO of Control Acustico
To maximise reach, the Ministry launched the online tools and monitoring network on national television, ensuring broad public awareness of both the noise pollution challenge and the infrastructure in place to manage it.
