The Project

Mechanical Levels to Digital — Streamlined.

The largest power plant in Puerto Rico needed a fast, reliable way to monitor levels in a new 32-foot condensed water tank — holding desalinated ocean water converted to steam to drive the plant’s turbines. Precision matters: water lost in the cycle must be replaced exactly, and overfilling is not an option.

The plant needed one installation with two layers of assurance: a digital signal in the control room DCS, and a mechanical reading at the tank. L&J Technologies — a Cognesense brand — paired the MCG 2420 Transmitter with a stainless steel Shand & Jurs 92302 Liquid Level Indicator to deliver both.

Indoor Noise Monitoring

The Shand & Jurs 92302 Liquid Level Indicator is a float-actuated gauge for low- and no-pressure tanks — reliable, but historically requires a walk to the tank for an updated reading.

The MCG 2420 Transmitter removed that step. Mounted to the inboard pulley with the tape aligned to the pulley teeth, the installation was simple and fast. Once calibrated, the MCG 2420 delivered level data on demand to the control room DCS over HART — digitally, via a 2-wire loop, using L&J Technologies’ absolute magnetic encoding with 1/32-inch accuracy across up to 85 feet of product.

Power failures are a non-issue. The MCG 2420 operates without batteries; the mechanical indicator holds calibration during an outage. When power returns, the transmitter reflects the current level — no recalibration required.

The plant is now planning the same configuration for a second tank on site and a facility further south.
