The Project

TacFuels® — Tactical Fuelling Solutions

In March 2012, a TacFuels® system from Varec — a Cognesense brand — was installed and commissioned across eight 210,000-gallon collapsible storage tanks at a forward operating base in Afghanistan.

Before TacFuels®, the site relied on the manual “string” inventory measurement method — labour-intensive, slow, and dangerous in a deployed environment. The data captured across February (pre-install) and April 2012 (post-install) tells the story of what changed.

The Solution

Analysing Performance Data

The charts compare daily inventory variance — segregated by movement activity (receipts, issues, defuels) — before and after the TacFuels® installation.

Before TacFuels® — February 2012

  • Inconsistent, erratic day-to-day activity
  • Daily physical inventory variance ranged from –5.42% to +2.74% — a near-7% swing
  • The variance masked the Accountable Officer’s ability to manage inventory and oversee fuel stocks
  • Fraud detection and identification of inoperative equipment were lost in the noise of accepted error

After TacFuels® — April 2012

  • Day-to-day gain/loss variance reduced to –1.01% to +0.27% — a more than 6× tightening of the variance band
  • Manual measurement errors eliminated — any substantial theft is now immediately identifiable
  • Issue-only days: variance of just 0.0064%
  • Receipt-only days: consistent –0.57% loss — flagging procedural shortfalls in receipt and defuel operations, and pointing to meter calibration and process review

Outcome

TacFuels® delivered tactical-grade accuracy in a deployed environment — turning an inventory process that masked operational risk into one that surfaces it. Mission-critical fuel intelligence, where reliability is not negotiable.
