The Project

Complete Load Rack Solution

In late 2011, Marstel Terminals Pty Ltd issued a scope of work for the design, manufacture, installation, and commissioning of a four-bay gantry truck loading and automation control system for a diesel terminal. Varec — a Cognesense brand — was selected for its extensive industry knowledge, local terminal automation experience, and the capabilities of FuelsManager®.

During design and engineering, the scope expanded — Marstel was acquired by Stolthaven Terminals, bringing corporate-grade instrumentation and safety requirements, plus specific needs from two major customers: a global mining company and a major oil company operating in the local energy market.

The Solution

  • Our Client: Stolthaven Terminals provides bulk liquid storage globally, with Stolthaven Australasia operating 10 facilities across Australia and New Zealand.
  • Newcastle Facility: Opened in 2014 at the Port of Newcastle, NSW, the terminal supports diesel and growing biofuel demand through five diesel and two biodiesel tanks.
  • Local Oversight, Global Engineering: Varec managed local delivery, supported by engineering from Atlanta HQ. Systems were factory-tested, locally sourced, and commissioned by Varec engineers.
  • Loading Bay Operations: Each bay supports simultaneous loading of three arms, enabling blended fuel loading from shared storage, with one bay also handling unloading.
  • Future-Ready: Designed for biodiesel blending (B5–B20) with additive injection, the system is IECEx Zone 1 compliant and scalable to five loading arms.
