The Project

Independent Liquid Level Monitoring for Overfill Protection.

A tank storage facility in St. Maarten needed a reliable way to prevent overfill incidents and meet aviation fuel storage code. The site comprises eight low-pressure tanks holding aviation fuel, monitored by radar level gauges.

Aviation fuel storage code requires an independent HLA (High Level Alarm) — and the Operations Manager recognised that the existing radar gauges did not deliver true redundancy. L&J Technologies — a Cognesense brand — proposed the MCG 1090 Level Alarm Probes with the MCG 7030 Touch Panel Alarm Monitor as the independent layer.

The Solution

Eight MCG 1090 Level Alarm Probes were installed — one displacer for high-level, one for high-high — with a built-in solenoid simulating a rising level for true self-testing in hard-to-access environments.

Paired with the MCG 7030 Touch Panel Alarm Monitor, the Operations Manager runs automatic self-checks, status reports before receiving, and remote emergency shut-off. The 7030 also drives a horn relay and four additional alarm relays.

Outcome

The system caught one tank overfilled past safe fill height in time to correct. The same configuration is now deployed across 26 Caribbean facilities, using the MCG 1090 and its wireless version, the MCG 1095.
