The Project

Fuel Facility Monitoring and Automation

The fuel storage facility at Salt Lake City International Airport is operated by Aircraft Service International Group (ASIG). In 2009, an independent feasibility study confirmed the existing inventory and control system was at end-of-life — built on ageing relays, custom software, and an outdated CiTech® gauging system with manual temperature readings.

ASIG turned to Varec — a Cognesense brand.

Our Partner

Varec — a Cognesense brand — the global standard in fuel management and terminal automation. FuelsManager® is the de facto standard in aviation fuel operations.

One partner. Every obligation. Legacy meets future.

The Solution

Varec replaced the legacy stack with:

  • Allen-Bradley® SLC 500 PLC — replacing the Opto-22 Control System
  • FuelsManager® Oil and Gas v7.4 with Product Movement Tracking — replacing CiTech inventory
  • Varec 6005 Servo Tank Gauges with calibration chamber and 4532 ATC — across all seven tanks
  • Varec 8130 RTU — replacing the legacy L&J Technologies MCG 3600 RTU

The new system delivers automated pump sequencing, balanced run times, validated product receipts, and redundancy — with manual EFSO override preserved for emergencies.

Implementation

Three phases: pre-configuration and testing in Atlanta, on-site commissioning, then cutover to the new PLC. Aircraft fuelling continued throughout. Scoped at six months — delivered in three.

System Benefits

  • SCADA-grade inventory and supervisory control from one interface
  • Hard-wired Magnetrol® level switches as independent redundancy
  • Historical operating data for load balancing and maintenance planning
  • Manual EFSO retained, with status visible in FuelsManager
  • Continuous level tracking via 6005 STGs
  • Float and tape gauges retained as manual backup
  • Real-time Product Movement Tracking
  • Cold backup server for full system redundancy
