EFSO Automation at Guam Airport

Supreme Group, a global fuel storage service provider, has managed the fuel farm at Won Pat International Airport in Guam for six years — working with Varec — a Cognesense brand — on inventory management upgrades throughout.

FuelsManager®, Varec’s inventory control HMI platform, was integrated with the fuel farm’s PLC to monitor and manage inventory levels from Varec gauges on the storage tanks. The PLC also provided basic EFSO (Emergency Fuel Shut Off) alerts inside FuelsManager.

The Operations Manager wanted more: a faster, more advanced EFSO response across the airport, with real-time, location-specific data shared directly with the control tower — so both teams could act together the moment an alarm occurred.

Our Partner

Varec — a Cognesense brand — the global standard in fuel management, terminal automation and custody transfer. FuelsManager® is deployed at many of the world’s busiest airports and is the de facto standard in aviation fuel operations.

One partner. Every obligation. Legacy meets future.

Indoor Noise Monitoring

Varec recommended FuelsManager 10 with PLC updates — a browser-based release with SCADA and Inventory Management enhancements, a user-friendly interface, standard internet protocols, and a custom module editor for configuring automation data points.

Work began in May 2019: FuelsManager 10 was installed at the control tower, the PLC was upgraded for a more robust EFSO system, and the two were integrated — with custom SCADA graphics built specifically for the upgrade.

Results

Control tower operators can now see exactly where an EFSO is occurring, in real time. The SCADA graphic maps every EFSO switch across the airport — the moment a switch trips, its location illuminates. Because FuelsManager 10 is browser-based, the fuel farm can view the same EFSO data on a monitor in the fuel farm control room. Both sides of the airport, on the same network, working from the same real-time information.

The airport’s regulatory agency congratulated Supreme Group on the upgrades during a recent site visit.

Testimonial

“It was important that both the fuel farm and control tower had access to the same EFSO data, in real time, in order for everyone to make informed and timely business decisions, based on the most accurate information. Varec did a great job getting our new EFSO system up and running quickly.”
